The study tour will take you to two sites:

St1 refinery

Our first stop will be St1 Nordic’s refinery in Gothenburg, the world’s first oil refinery integrated advanced ethanol plant. Privately-held St1 Nordic Oy is a Finland-headed oil refiner, renewable energy producer, and fuel distributor and a pioneer in advanced biofuels producing ethanol from different waste materials. The company is rolling out residue-based cellulosic ethanol production plants across the Nordics and further afield. Dealing with the distillation curve challenge, St1 integrated a 5 million litre per annum ethanol unit in 2015 at its refinery in Gothenburg and is now planning for HVO production having recently formed a partnership with forest industry major SCA.

Hear more from Hilde Wahl, Managing Director, St1 Sverige about ”CO2 Reduction Obligation – a way to combine advanced biofuels and global afforestation” during the conference, by registering today.

Södra Cell Värö biorefinery

The second stop will be Södra Cell Värö biorefinery, which is the biggest sawmill and the most modern pulp mill in Sweden. Södra Cell belongs to Södra, Sweden’s largest forest owners association that is investing heavily into its wood processing industries to increase productivity and product diversity while decreasing energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Södra has also pledged to be fossil free by 2030. In biofuels, the company is a stakeholder in Sunpine AB where crude tall oil (CTO) is converted to renewable diesel crude for oil refiner Preem. Furthermore, it is investing in methanol extraction at its Mönsterås pulp mill and has initiated a biofuels demonstration project in Norway together with Statkraft.
