ABC 2021: Industry perspectives – Possibilities and commercialization
The Swedish Bioenergy Association (Svebio) is organizing the 7th Advanced Biofuels Conference (ABC 2021) which provides you with the latest on renewable transportation fuels, novel technologies and policy developments. Meet the leading players and experts from around the world, on-site or online, in Stockholm at ABC 2021, September 21-23.
With six sessions over two days, the conference will showcase the latest developments and insights in European and international policy, the transition from fossil to renewable fuels and new technologies, investments and partnerships. Leading companies will present solutions with current and new production of advanced biofuels.
Industry perspectives – Possibilities and commercialization
Session 3 “Industry perspectives – Possibilities and commercialization” will feature amongst others Mika Anttonen, Chairman of the Board, St1 Nordic, a Finland-headed oil refiner and renewable energy company with biofuel production, distribution and retail operations across the Nordics. Anttonen will discuss investing in large-scale biofuel production and renewable energy, a topic that St1 is particularly well-versed. In Sweden, St1 operates an oil refinery in Gothenburg that in 2015 opened the world’s first oil refinery integrated advanced ethanol plant.

During ABC 2019, St1 announced that it was going ahead with a EUR 200 million biorefinery investment at its Gothenburg site to be able to process a wide range of feedstocks meeting current and future specifications for renewable fuels such as HVO, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and bionaphtha. The new biorefinery is expected to start production in 2022.
This summer, St1 entered into the Nordic biomethane (aka renewable natural gas – RNG) production, distribution and retail space in a big way with the acquisition of E.ON Biofor Sverige AB– E.ON’s Swedish biogas arm, a stake in the Norwegian firm Biogas Energi Aksdal, and the setting up of a joint venture with Finnish dairy co-op major Valio to develop manure-based biogas and upgrading plants amongst Valio members. In the latter alone, the JV is targeting 1TWh per annum of production by 2030.

Just recently, St1 revealed plans for a feasibility study to develop a green ammonia project in Finnmark, Norway together with the Norwegian clean energy company Horisont Energi using renewable electricity from St1’s planned 800 MW Davvi wind park and hydrogen from green sources. St1 has already Power-to-X experience from Finland, at its Jokioinen ethanol biorefinery.
Biofuels – bioliquids, and green gases – are essential in the global effort to replace fossil fuels and reach the Paris Agreement goals of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. As businesses, industries, and societies begin a green recovery in a post-pandemic world, the demand for transportation fuels is expected to rise. Advanced biofuels, and renewable synthetic fuels are together with conventional so-called first-generation biofuels an important and reliable climate-neutral part of the solution, available today – and viable for tomorrow.
