Study tour 1: Chalmers Power Central in Gothenburg

Chalmers Power Central is located in central Gothenburg on the Johanneberg campus of Chalmers University of Technology. The Power Central i owned by Akademiska Hus.

Chalmers Power Central is an advanced energy research facility since many years. It is home to cutting-edge research in combustion and gasification of biomass in a large-scale research boiler, as well as flame combustion and carbon capture. At the visit we will hear about and discuss the research and development work carried out at Chalmers.

We will see a modern R & D Boiler. The steam boiler is made for wood pellets, solid fuels, biooil as secondary fuel. The boiler has a capacity of 6 MW and produce steam at 40 bar and 400°C. The plant was built 2018 by PetroBio. The delivery includes fuel reception, fuel storage, fuel milling, burner, boiler, soot cleaning, dust cleaning, electrics and controls.

Study tour 2: Visit to Solör Bioenergi Heating Plant in Landvetter

The Solör Bioenergi heating plant in Landvetter has a capacity of 4 MW. In the past, the plant used briquettes as its main fuel. During the recent biomass fuel supply crisis, it switched to using wood chips from stems, branches, and tops. Since the facility is designed for dry biomass fuels, operating with wood chips proved challenging. This resulted in many unplanned stops and low energy efficiency.

After switching to wood pellets in 2024, operations have run smoothly, with virtually no alarms and a boiler efficiency between 85–90%. The experience with wood pellets has been very positive.

Solör Bioenergi has owned the plant and the district heating net since 2014 and the demand for district heating has increased during the years.
